2026 Is the New 2016. So, What Did 2016 Smell Like?

    • Aug 07, 2026
    • by Dom De Vetta

Apparently 2026 is the new 2016. Give the internet a decade and it will start aching for a year it barely bothered to enjoy at the time. The side part is back. The chokers are back. The blurry, direct-flash photograph — the kind taken at 1:43am by someone who was not thinking about a grid — is back. We can reconstruct exactly how 2016 looked, and we can hum exactly how it sounded, from the opening bars of Blonde to the swagger of Lemonade. What nobody has managed to bring back is the smell of it.

A hand holding a cracked phone playing an augmented-reality monster-catching game while a group plays in the same park
Summer 2016 — the whole park playing the same game

The summer the sidewalk became a playground

For about six weeks in 2016, every park turned into a shared game. Strangers walked in the same direction at the same speed, phones held at chest height, batteries flatlining at 12% by four in the afternoon. Nobody filmed it. Nobody captioned it. It simply happened, and then it stopped happening, and the only record most of us kept was a camera roll of badly exposed grass.

That is the part the archive misses. A photograph remembers the sneakers and the choker. It does not remember the smell of crushed grass and hot skin, or sunscreen going slightly sweet in a backpack, or the metallic bite of a gas-station energy drink drunk far too fast.

“Scent is a time machine; it is the most resilient archive of our lives, capturing the parts a camera roll inevitably misses.” Dom De Vetta, Founder — Shay & Blue, 2024

The lip kit, the liner, the scrunchie — getting ready, 2016

The uniform is easy to list, because we have all seen the moodboards: shell-toe sneakers gone gray at the toe, a wristband kept on for six months past the festival, wired earbuds knotted at the bottom of a bag, a lip kit applied in the back of an Uber.

What the moodboard cannot give you is the fog of a bedroom where three people are getting ready at once — hairspray, dry shampoo, three competing perfumes, and the specific electricity of not knowing how the night ends.

    The unbothered one

If you want that feeling in a bottle now, White Peaches is the closest thing to a Friday in July: bright, sparkling, faintly nectar-sweet, and completely uninterested in being taken seriously.

“We were not optimising. We were going out.”

Scent is the part your camera roll missed

    Last ride home, flash on

Think back and the memories arrive as smells before they arrive as pictures. Chlorine drying on your shoulders after an afternoon at the pool. Sugary lip gloss. Hot asphalt steaming after a sudden downpour, which always meant the evening was about to get interesting. Someone else's fragrance left on a denim jacket, still there the next morning, belonging to a person you have not spoken to in years.

Fragrance works as an accidental archive precisely because we never intend it to. Nobody buys a perfume as a bookmark. You wear it through first dates and bad Tuesdays and airport lines until it quietly absorbs the whole period, and then one spray a decade later drags a version of you back into the room.

“Smell has a power of persuasion stronger than that of words, appearances, emotions, or will.” Patrick Süskind, Author — Perfume, 1985

For the part of the night after midnight

The other half of 2016 was darker, louder and much later. Tulip & Plum is built for it — plum, cocoa and a smoky, genderful depth that survives a crowded room and still reads expensive at breakfast.

What will 2026 smell like in 2036?

    The drink of 2026, time-stamped

Right now the answer is green. The strawberry matcha latte is the drink of this exact moment — whisked, layered, photographed in a shaft of cafe light — and the note has walked straight from the counter into fine fragrance.

Matcha bottles it: green, creamy, faintly bitter, quietly modern. Wear it beside the soft luminous floral of Lily La Luxe and you have the scent signature of this decade before it has finished happening.

Spray it now and you are time-stamping the era. In 2036, one whisper of that milky green warmth will put you back in a 2026 morning, phone face down, nothing optimized.

Because that is the real lesson of the revival. Nobody is nostalgic for low-rise jeans or a heavy vignette filter. What we miss is being less edited — taking the bad photo because the moment was better than the framing, choosing a fragrance because it smells like you rather than because it is trending.

“Nobody is nostalgic for the filter. We miss being less edited.”

Your 2026 is already being filed. The perfume you spray this morning is attaching itself to the new job, the fall walks, the 1am conversations. By 2036 the internet will decide this was the greatest year of all time, and it will reconstruct the fashion, the music and the light. It will not be able to reconstruct the smell. Only you get that. See you in 2036.
